Wedding Hairstyle Updos: What You Need To Know About The Updo Hair Style

Hair updos provide the perfect style for any occasion. Wedding updos can be elegant, sophisticated, and beautiful. Prom updos can be fun and flirty or classy and gorgeous. Similarly, hair updos can provide a casual look for day to day activities or a business look for work. Or, those looking for a little added sex appeal can experiment with a variety of hair updos to let the sultry side shine.

Half Up/Half Down Hair Updos

One interesting variation of hair updos is the half up/half down style. These modified hair updos involve pinning up part of the hair while allowing the rest of the hair to flow around the shoulders or back. These hair updos can look stunning on a wedding day or they can look sexy for a night on the town.

Women with fine hair sometimes have a difficult time with half up/half down style hair updos because the pins holding it in place have a tendency to slip. Therefore, it is generally best to treat the hair ahead of time with plenty of gel and holding spray and to use many bobby pins.

Creating Half Up/Half Down Hair Updos

Even if the hair is not thin, it is best to refrain from washing the hair for at least 24 hours before creating a half up/half down style. This is because the natural oils in the hair help the parts and knots used in these hair updos stay tight and long lasting. If the hair has been recently washed, it needs to be treated with hair spray or gel to prep it for styling.

After the hair is ready for hair updos, it should be brushed thoroughly and made free of tangles and knots. Then, sections of about 1-2” thickness should be created and straightened with a flat iron. After the hair has been allowed to cool, the tail of a rattail comb should be used to create a side part. This part should extend from the front of the hairline to about 2 inches from the crown of the head.

The hair should then be brushed from the part to the hairline’s opposite side. Then, the new section that has been created should be pulled behind the ear. The stylist should then use her hands and a paddle brush to smooth the hair in order to contain all of the random hairs within the new section.

The hair should then be temporarily clipped behind the ear. One small strand of hair can also be pulled from the new section in order to create an accent piece. This strand should be taken from near the eyebrow and it can be left either straight or slightly curled.

Next, the other side of the hair should be brushed until it is smooth. It should be brushed behind the other ear and also clipped temporarily. Each section can then be unclipped from behind the ears one at a time. The sections should then be separated equally into bottom and top sections, making each section into two new sections. The bottom portion should be pulled into a loose ponytail in order to keep it out of the way for the next step.

Then, one of the top sections should be brushed toward the middle of the back portion of the head and rolled into a fairly flat and horizontal hair roll. It should be pinned securely and flatly against the scalp. It is generally necessary to add a light gel or a setting lotion to each section of the hair at this point. Otherwise, the hair may be too slippery and will not hold well.

The other top section should then also be rolled to the middle and back section of the head. It is important to be sure to slightly overlap the first section that was rolled. The second roll needs to be pinned in a fashion that hides the first roll. The entire area then needs to be sprayed with hairspray in order to keep it in place.

A large decorative clip, a flower, or other hair accessory can then be added. Not only is this attractive, it also helps to hide the overlapping hair rolls. For a little more pizzazz, a bit of glitter gel can also be added to the sides or back.

The sections that were being temporarily held in loose ponytails can then be let out. A curling iron can be used to create a soft bend in the ends of the hair. These will also need to be sprayed in order to hold them in place.

You have finally decided to tie the knot. Congratulations! The bad news is there are dozens and dozens of decisions that you will have to make before the big day.

Although it sounds overwhelming now, don't look on the wedding decision making process as a chore. It should be fun and memorable and hopefully it will be for both the bride and groom. Here is a terrific tip to help you stay organized from the outset: start a wedding timetable.

A wedding timetable consists of a short list of wedding-related tasks as well as a rough estimate of when the activities should be done.. The timetable will give you guide and help you stay on track for planning the big day. Remember, you are in control of the tasks needed to complete a flawless wedding. Here are some wedding timetable points of interest and obvious tasks that will follow each one.

The Engagement

1) Let your loved ones know that you've just been engaged. Parents and immediate family members should be the first to know, followed by close friends - especially people that you would like to be a part of the wedding ceremony.
2) Put together a folder or 3 ring binder, an organizer for your wedding. This will help you keep track of all the appointments, payments and other wedding-related activities that you must attend to.
3) Schedule your engagement photo as soon as possible. You will use this for announcements for newspapers and for friends, relatives, etc.

6 to 12 Months Before Your Wedding Day

1) Set the date and time for the ceremony. You'll need to contact the church and person who will be marrying you to arrange for the ceremony to be held there (unless you are eloping to Las Vegas!) You should also reserve the spot for the reception as well at this time. The sooner the better.
2) Now is the time to outline your budget for the wedding. Also, begin preparing your wedding list. This may take some time as to not leave anyone out that you may not have thought of.
3) Now is the time to begin to line up other professionals that will make your day special. This includes the photographer, florists, and a band or DJ, ceremony musicians, and also the caterer. It is best to first get estimates from 1 or 2 that you have been recommended to or konw, then decide which one to go with based on how much you can spend.
4) Register at the bridal gift registry.
5) Begin to research and decide on the wedding dress and accessories for the big event. If you are having a seamstress make you one, this is the time to have it arranged. Keep in mind that you will need several fittings if you go this route, so plan early. You will also need to select your bridesmaids and decide on the style and designs of the dresses they will be wearing. Be sure to set a date for ordering dresses for the bridesmaids.

4 to 6 Months In Advance Before the Wedding

1) Order invitations, stationary, wedding favors, and thank you notes.
2) You should by now have other professionals lined up. You'll need to sit down or talk with your photographer, florist, band leader or DJ, ceremony musicians and the caterer to go over details with each of them. Leave nothing to chance. Once your wedding day arrives it is too late to negotiate with these professionals if you have left something out that you desired.
3) Select the style and attire for your groom and groomsmen. 4) It is not too early to begin setting honeymoon reservations. Hotels, flights, rental cars and other planned activities should be set in advance so everything goes smoothly after the wedding day as well.
5) Confirm the delivery of the bridal gown.

2 Months In Advance Before the Big Day

1) Plan the rehearsal dinner. If you are having out-of-town guests and for those standing up in the wedding, arrange for their lodging and transportation.
2) Make an appointment with your chosen photographer for the shooting of the bridal portrait.
3) Order the wedding cake.

1 Month In Advance Before the Big Day

1) Both the bride and groom should decide on a wedding band set.
2) Complete and mail the wedding invitations.
3) Check to see that bridesmaids dresses and mens tuxes are all set to go for the wedding party.
4) Attend showers held by friends and relatives.

2 Weeks Before the Wedding

1) Apply for the marriage license and attend to other legal matters, especially for the bride. She will need to change her name and address for on bank accounts and other official documents.
2) Decide on a wedding hairstyle and make-up with your stylist or hairdresser.
3) It is a good idea at this point to check with the caterer and the reception venue for any last minute changes or concerns.

1 Week Before the Wedding

1) Begin packing for the honeymoon!
2) Don't forget to buy and wrap gifts for the groom and attendants.
3) Schedule and notify all involved regarding the wedding rehearsal.

On the Wedding Day

1) Be sure to eat a good breakfast even if you don't feel particularly hungry. You don't want to faint at your own wedding!
2) Have your hair and make-up done.

Wedding hair style secrets

I know EXACTLY what you mean about the little wispy's. The answer to your
prayers: pomade. It's a product reminiscent of men's hair grease from the
50's (sounds disgusting, I know), but it's grown up a lot and there are a
variety of products now available. I prefer it to gel, mouse and hairspray
because it doesn't get that dry brittle look.

Check out your hairdresser's shop. It's inexpensive $5 for a small jar that
lasts for months. A little really goes a long way. You put it on your hair
dry and smooth the wispies into place. There are glossy options and
non-glossy options, based on your preference. I prefer non-glossy so I
don't get that greasy look. I use one by Brocato, but a friend of mine just
introduced me to one called Bedhead.


Spend $5 and try it before you cut off the hair you've been growing out for
your wedding. (I grew mine out, and at the last minute panicked and cut it
short -- the way I was used to wearing it at the time. It looked okay, but
I regret it.)

Trusting you hair dresser is one thing, trusting your hairdresser on your wedding day is another. Having a good relationship with the person doing your wedding hair on that special day is essential, especially since looking great starts with great hair.

A good idea is to go through the "wedding hair plan" with your stylist in advance, especially with an up-do or a French Roll. Since a lot of hairspray and bobby pins are usually used, it is necessary to make sure that it is going to stay in through the day, for the pictures, during the reception, and an evening of dancing. Taking the up-do for a test run, be it at a staggett, or just on a night out before the wedding day is a good way to tell if that is going to be the hairstyle you want on your wedding day. If the same stylist is doing the bridal parties' hairstyles it is wise to have them do the same thing.

If you are looking for something to make your up-do a little more fancy, specialty bobby pins with decorative rhinestones can be purchased at some salons, and drugstores in the hair accessory section. You can also purchase hair accessories that have butterflies or flowers on the ends of them so they accent your wedding hair style from out of the side of your up-do or French Roll.

If your stylist is coming to your location on the day of the wedding, make sure they get there earlier than you need them to be. You just never know what can happen to a stylist on the way there. If you are doing your wedding hair yourself, or having a friend do it make sure they have to correct tools is key, for big bouncy curls, hot rollers, and for straight hair a ceramic straightener can be picked up at any drugstore for a reasonable price. They are also a lot better for your hair than the metal hair irons...those just cause frizz
